A lot of people in San Diego County stay in the house while the kitchen is torn out. A small house, a kid’s school year, or a pet that cannot board makes a move-out unrealistic. Staying home is possible on some jobs. It is a bad plan on others, especially when the only bathroom shares a wall that has to open, or when the water to the whole house has to stay off.

Modern Kitchen San Diego does not run job sites. The remodeler you hire decides how the house is protected. Do not assume you can cook and wash dishes the whole time because a friend did.

Which sink is actually available

If the kitchen sink is the one coming out, name the backup before demo. A bathroom sink works for toothbrushes and not for a sheet pan. A laundry sink is more useful if you can reach it without walking dust through the bedroom. Some crews set a temporary sink. If yours will, the bid should say so, including who supplies it and when it comes out.

Ask which days the water to the kitchen is off, and whether the rest of the house stays on. A whole-house shutoff for a short tie-in is different from a week with no kitchen water. Get that in a sentence you can read, not a shrug.

The dishwasher and the disposal go with the sink. If you were counting on the dishwasher during the job, stop. It will not be there.

Fridge, dust, and the doorway

The fridge has to live somewhere with a plug that can take it, on a floor that can take the weight, and on a path wide enough to roll it. A hallway that looks wide until you hit a corner is a common miss. Measure the path before you promise yourself the fridge stays cold in the dining room.

Dust moves. Plastic on a doorway helps and does not make the job clean. If someone in the house has asthma, say that at the first meeting. Pets need a room with a door that latches, not a baby gate they push through the first time a saw starts. Birds and heavy dust are a bad mix. Plan the pet before the first demo morning.

Floors outside the kitchen need protection the crew will actually walk on. A pretty runner that slides is worse than no runner. Ask what they use and who repairs a scratched floor if the protection fails.

What the contract should name

Which fixtures stay usable. Where the fridge goes. Whether you have access to a bathroom at all times. What time work starts, which matters in a condo or an HOA more than in a detached house on a large lot. Who has a key.

If any of those are “we’ll see,” you do not yet have a plan to live there. You have a hope. Hopes are fine while you are interviewing. They are thin once the sink is gone.
